Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited sponsored Friends of Rugby
South-West League kicks off on Saturday 9th April, 2016 at the main bowl of the
National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The 2016
league which features major changes in the competition’s history, has been
divided into two divisions. Four teams will participate in Premier Division
while three teams in the Division 2.
The league
which is sanctioned by Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) and was announced in Lagos in February by Friends
of Rugby will be contested by six Lagos based teams and one team from Ilorin,
Kwara State.
“Rugby is a
natural fit for our country,” said Kelechukwu Mbagwu, Chairman Friends of
Rugby.
“Participation and interest in the sport is on the high and we have
decided to divide the completion into two to increase the competitiveness with
the first four teams from last season grouped into Premier Division and the
bottom four into Division 2. The bottom team in the premier division will
relegate to Division 2 whilst the winner in Division 2 will be promoted to
Premier Division. ”
The League which
will be played between April and June, will also serve as a platform for players’
selection by the NRFF Technical Team for the Nigeria 15s Africa Cup engagement
in Morocco in July. Teams will play at least 6 regular-season games each.
The oldest
rugby club in the west, Lagos Rugby Club will kick off the League against Eco
II RFC in a Division 2 encounter at 12noon followed by the defending champions,
Cowrie RFC against Police RFC at 2pm. The last match of the day will be between
last season’s runner up; Racing RFC and Gosar RFC by 4pm.
