THE third edition of the Zainab Saleh International
Female Open Karate Championship begins on Wednesday with a seminar and
interactive session for children and adults of all ages, grades and styles at the
Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The competition is the “Brain Child” of Hajiya Zainab
Saleh, a 4th Dan Shotokan Karateka, the sponsor and also the technical director
of Lagos State Karate Association.
According to the organizers, the preceding open seminar
scheduled for today and tomorrow (June 1 and 2) will be conducted by Japanese
instructor, Sensei Tomiko Mitsuoka before the main championship begins on June
3.
The female championship would feature two main events,
including Kumite, which involves two competitors sparring on the mat to score
points. The second is Kata, a demonstration of fighting an imaginary opponent.
According to World Shotokan Karate-De Federation, Nigeria
Chapter’s Chief Instructor, Bob Bamgboye Sensei, the event, which is open to
all female Karate students around the world, would help Nigerians nursing the
ambition of excelling in the combat sport to gain experience and exposure as
their counterparts from across Africa and other continents, who will
participate in the event.
