CSKA MOSCOW 1 - 4 ZENIT: Aaron Samuel scores, injured in Cup Final loss

SUPER Eagles striker, Aaron Samuel is a potential doubt for Nigeria’s double header international friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg after suffering an injury in CSKA Moscow 1-4 home loss to Zenit St. Petersburg in the final of the Russian Cup on Monday.


The Nigerian international was substituted three minutes after scoring CSKA’s only goal of the game played at the Kazan Arena.

Brazilian striker, Hulk opened scoring from the penalty spot in the 34th minute before Samuel leveled up for the host in the 36th minute. The Nigerian striker got injured minutes later and was replaced by Kirill Panchenko in the 39th minute.

Hulk then put the visitors ahead in the 63rd minute also via a penalty. Alexander Kokorin increased the tally for Zenit in the 56th minute, before Artur Yusupov completed the rout in the 70th minute; as the gamed ended 4-1 at full time.

Super Eagles vice-captain, Ahmed Musa was also in action for the entire duration for CSKA; but still couldn’t make any impact for the Red-Blues.

Samuel has so far racked up 7 caps and 2 goals for the Nigeria since 2014. He scored the two brilliant goals for the Super Eagles in the 2015 Cup of Nations qualifying race – against Sudan in Abuja and against Congo in Pointe Noir.

The former Guangzhou R&F of China striker is among the 25 players invited by the country's interim head coach Salisu Yusuf for the warm-up games.


The Super Eagles play Mali in France on May 27 before facing Luxembourg on June 1.
