THE Preliminary round of matches in the 2nd Opeifa Cup Lagos Schools Handball Championship was concluded Wednesday at the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba with defending champions of the girls' category Onike Girls Grammar School among the qualifiers for the quarterfinals.
Among the other qualifiers to the last-eight in the junior girls’ category are Ilupeju Grammar School, Bariga Girls Grammar School, St Francis and Zumratul Islamiyyah Grammar School.
In the junior Boys’ event, Herbert Macaulay, Gbaja Boys and Jibowu Junior Grammar School were also through to the quarterfinals.
Archdeacon Adelaja Memorial, Lagos City college, Aiyetoro Grammar School and Mainland were among the teams that are through to the last-eight of the Boys’ Senior category while Birrel Avenue, Mainland Girls, Lagos City college and Herbart Macaulay also booked their places in the quarterfinals of the week-long tournament which is featuring 94 schools across Lagos State.
Lagos State Handball coach, Agboola Shittu called for the provision of more facilities across the state to aid in the growth and popularity of the game noting there has been a marginal improvement from the standard of the last edition.
The former national team player further observed that the game-masters are lacking the technical knowledge and needed assistance such that by the time they go into competitions, they would have reached a much higher level.
The tournament which will end on Saturday is sponsored by Comrade Kayode Opeifa, the former Commissioner for Transport in Lagos State.
