Ghana, Togo teams for Zainab Saleh Karate Open

AFTER a two-day demonstrational workshop and  interactive sessions, the main championship for the third edition of Hajiya Zainab Saleh International Female Karate Open begins on Friday with karatekas from Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana and clubs across Nigeria competing for honours at the Indoor Sports Hall of Sir Molade Okoya Thomas of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.


The open seminar attended by children and adults of all ages, grades and styles was conducted by Japanese instructor, Sensei Tomiko Mitsuoka who is an  8th Dan, the highest karate ranking in the world.

The female championship would feature two main events, including Kumite, which involves two competitors sparring on the mat to score points. The second is Kata, a demonstration of fighting an imaginary opponent.

Karatekas will compete in the Senior and Junior Kumute in the following categories:
Senior Female Individual Kumute (WKF): +18, -50kg,-55kg,-61kg, 68kg and +68 kg
Junior Female (WFK)  Kamute: - 40kg, -53kg,-59kg and +59kg in Brown and Black belt, Green and Blue belt and White and Yellow belt, with trophies, medals and cash awards to take home.

The Championship is sponsored by Hajiya Zainab Saleh a 4th Dan Shotokan karateka, who also doubles as the Technical Director of the Lagos State Karate Association.
