NIGERIAN swimmers placed third with 35 medals at the just
concluded African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone Two swimming championship,
held in Senegal.
Senegal, the host county placed first followed by Mali, Nigeria,
Cote d'ivoire and Burkina Faso in that order.
At the end of the three-day championship, Team Nigeria
won 10 gold, 12 Silva and 13 bronze medals for a total of 35.
The females of Team Nigeria won more than 75 percent of
the total female medals, which earned them the Best Female Team award.
Ifeakchukwu Nmor, who won the 50m butterfly, received an
award for the best performance (male), while Team Nigeria mixed medley relay is
the record holder of the 4 x 100m.
Every member of the swimming Team Nigeria won at least a
medal personally, which saw them on every medals table of every event.
The president of the swimming and life saving federation
of Senegal, Dr.Mohammed Diop, who is also the vice-president of CANA, showered
praises on team Nigeria on their feat, despite all the other countries trained
in France, Monaco and the United States of America.
He said the locally-trained-in-Lagos Team Nigeria, added
colour to the CANA zone 2 swimming championship.
Team Nigeria were coached by Emmanuel Goodie Emefuna and
Sunday Tilije, under the supervision of the chairman technical swimming committee
of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Steve Onyeacholam at the renovated National
Stadium Swimming pool, Surulere, Lagos.
