Balogun makes Bundesliga Team of The Week

SUPER Eagles and Mainz 05 defender, Leon Balogun has been named in the German Bundesliga's Team of The Week for Gameweek 4 by whoscored.com, one of the largest detailed football statistics website which covers Europe's top leagues.


The 28 year old defender was not deterred by his protective mask as he helped the Carnival club secured a 2-1 away victory over Werder Bremen in front of 37108 spectators at the Weserstadion on Wednesday.

The home side had taken the lead in the 12th minute through a sensational long-range strike from Izet Hajrovic and looked as though they would earn their first points of the new Bundesliga season, but goals from Jhon Cordoba and Pablo de Blasis sent them to a harsh defeat late in the game. 

The Nigerian international who got 8.01 rating by the website, was in action for the entire duration of the encounter. 

Whoscored.com’s Bundesliga Best XI saw Balogun partners Eintracht Frankfurt defender, David Abraham (8.37) in the heart of defense with Sebastian Rudy (7.94) of Hoffenheim on the right back and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bastian Oczipka (9.02) on the left back position.

The midfield is dominated Bayern Munich duo of Frank Ribery (8.6) and Thiago Alcantara (8.69), Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro (9.11) and Izet Hajrovic (8.01) who was in action for Werder Bremen last weekend. 

Borussia Dortmund striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (8.88) who scored twice a 5-1 rout of Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena partners FC Cologne forward, Anthony Modeste (9.08) in the attack, while Roman Bürki (8.25) who ensured Borussia Dortmund climbed to the Bundesliga's summit in the team goalkeeper. 



Balogun who has been ever present for the Bundesliga outfit this season is among the 23 players invited by Nigeria’s Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, for next month’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Matchday 1 clash between the Super Eagles and Zambia’s Chipolopolo billed to hold on Sunday 9th October at the Levy Nwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
