NIGERIA'S leading innovative financial institution, Union Bank has made a pledge of ₦25 million to the 100 Team Nigeria Olympics and Paralympics athletes ahead of both the Rio Olympic Games and the Paralympics holding in Rio, Brazil.

The Olympic Games will hold from 5 to 21 August, while the Paralympic Games has been scheduled to hold from September 7 to 18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Union Bank while disclosing the package via its official Twitter handle on Tuesday, the pledged will see the sum of ₦250,000 given to each athlete to the Rio 2016 Games, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.

Aside from that, the bank also pledge to support the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) with the sum of  ₦5 million.

"We are answering the call to #HelpNigerianAthletes at #Rio2016 #UnionBankCares #SupportTeamNigeria," the bank said via @UNIONBANK_NG.

"We just pledged ₦25 million to the 100 #TeamNigeria #Olympics & #Paralympics athletes! #UnionBankCares #Rio2016.

"We pledge ₦250,000 to each member of #Rio2016 #SupportTeamNigeria #Olympics & #paralympics athlete. #UnionBankCares.

"We also pledge support of ₦5 million to @NigeriaOlympic council. #NOC #Rio2016 #UnionBankCares #SupportTeamNigeria.

Union Bank however called on other corporate organisations to come out and support the athletes, saying that, "It is our collective responsibility to support and uplift them."

"We are calling on all Nigerians to #SupportTeamNigeria at #Rio2016 #UnionBankCares #NaijaNoGoCarryLastForRio.

"When our athletes win, we share the pride, when they lose, we share the pain. #SupportTeamNigeria #Rio2016 #UnionBankCares.

"It is our collective responsibility to support & uplift them! #Rio2016  #SupportTeamNigeria #UnionBankCares.

"Let’s make #Rio2016 a shining light for all Nigerians!  #SupportTeamNigeria #UnionBankCares.

Nigeria's triple jump king Tosin Oke commended the bank for the  initiative.

"What a huge statement! This is exactly what Nigerian sport needs, I hope this is the start of something positive," the two-time African Championships gold medallist and former Commonwealth Games champion tweeted.

The pledge no doubt is coming at the right time when the Ministry of Youth and Sports just promised to send air tickets for the Rio Games to athletes by midweek following last weekend's embarrassment caused by the Olympic-bound athletes who were begging for funds on Social Media to buy flight tickets.

Team Nigeria to the Rio Games will depart on August 1, 2016 through Ethiopia Airlines as the Games village opened on July 24, 2016.
