NIGERIAN-born Olympic silver medallist from Beijing 2008 Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor had a disappointing outing at the Oslo leg of the IAAF Diamond League held on Thursday as the sprint queen could only manage a seventh-place finish in the Long Jump event entered for.
With her final leap of 6.48m, there was very little to cheer for Okagbare who has been quite shaky in her performances in the run to the IAAF World Championships, where she proudly has two medals to her name.
However, what is trending now on the social media is that the Nigerian athlete lost her wig on her opening long jump attempt where she leaped 6.21 meters, well off her personal best of seven meters flat.
Her wig came off as she landed and whipped her head back in the sand pit. The 28 year old appeared to notice the embarrassing error when she looked back at her mark and smiled.
Most people would probably be mortified if they lost their in front of a stadium full of people.
Rather than being embarrassed by the incident, the accomplished Nigerian simply waited for her mark to be measured (6.21m) before picking up the hairpiece and proceeding to slip it back into place.
Okagbare will need another try having failed to hit the 6.75m qualification standard in the long jump set for August’s 17th IAAF World Championships scheduled for London.
For the Oslo meeting, the reigning World and Olympic champion Tianna Bartoleta proved her mettle as she won the event with her 6.79m fifth round effort, while Russian athlete Klishina Darya (6.75) who competed as an Authorised Neutral Athlete and Germany’s Rath Claudia (6.63m) came second and third respectively.
