THE Nigeria Wrestling
Federation has extended the registration deadline for countries wishing to participate
in the Africa Wrestling Championship billed to hold in Port Harcourt next month
to January 31, 2018.
About 43 countries are
expected to compete at the tournament to be staged in Port Harcourt, Rivers
State from February 7th – 11th, 2018 and it will be the first time Nigeria will
be hosting since 1976.
President of the federation,
Hon. Daniel Igali informed Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com that all hands are on deck
to ensure that the country put up the best in terms of organization in the
history of the tournament.
“In the history of wrestling in Africa, We’ve never had competitions
in February before. The earliest has been the end of March. So a lot of
countries now have budget issues. Normally the registration supposed to come to
an end on the 7th of January but we decide to end it on the 31st.
So it is until the end of this month that we would be able to know the exact
numbers of countries coming,” Igali told Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com.
Meanwhile the NWF Technical Director, Sir Damian Ohaike informed
Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com that the country’s wrestlers have continued
preparations for the African Wrestling Championship in three center: Bayelsa,
Port Harcourt and Ondo.
“The camp is on in
the three centers and the athletes are getting on fine with their preparations.
All the Greco Roman wrestlers including the Senior teams are camped in Yenegoa,
Bayelsa; the Cadet and Junior are camped in Ondo and we also have Cadet and
Junior wrestlers in Port Harcourt,” Ohaike told Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com.
