FOLLOWING the conclusion of a successful trial, the
Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) have selected the 90 athletes that will
represent the country at the 2018 African Wrestling Championship scheduled to
hold from February 7 to 11 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Nigeria will present 10 wrestlers each in the cadet,
junior and senior weight categories of all the three styles; Greco-Roman,
Female Wrestling and Men’s Freestyle.
The athletes who were camped in three cities, Akure,
Yenagoa and Port Harcourt converged at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre
Indoor Sports Hall, Port Harcourt where they slugged it out for a place in the
Team Nigeria Wrestling contingent.
Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that over 190 athletes participated
in the trials under the watchful eyes of the President of the Federation,
Daniel Igali.
In a chat with SportingLife, NWF Secretary-General, Ahmed
Abdullahi expressed confidence that the selected wrestlers will do the country
proud at the continental meet.
“Everything is going according to plan. We have done our
trial and the Greco roman was concluded today (Monday). At the same time all
the remaining athletes in the junior and the cadet have done their trials.
“The trial is to
select all the 90 weight categories. So we have to select the best who will
represent the country and that is what we have done now. We have confidence
that the wrestlers will do the country proud,” Abdullahi told Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com.
