World Rugby certified Referee Course will improve Nigeria rugby, says NRFF


THE Vice President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Olatunji Fasimonye says the first World Rugby certified referee level one training course recently held in Lagos will help to develop the game in the country.


The two-day training witnessed the expected fifteen participants across the federation under the tutorship of renowned Argentine World Rugby license facilitator, Marcelo Blanco, reports sportsbiz247.blogspot.com.

The workshop focused on the rudiment of the game, the application of its rule and the game stimulation. It also involve practical session in  interval at the Main Bowl of the Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

"The purpose of this training is to improve Nigeria Rugby and to develop the match officials and referees to have more experience," said the vice president, who also the technical director of the game.

The participants of the training includes referees, player-coach, the game officials both male and females, who spoke of their personal objectives and visions for the game in the country.

I.K Eze, who plays for young lions of Lagos has being involved in the game for 18 years  
"I have passion for the game, I also want to improve," he said.

Also Suraj Abdullahi, who is one of the most popular players in the just concluded South West Rugby League spoke on his vision for the game in the country.

"I want Rugby to grow so that Nigerians can be actively involved," he said. 

During the questions and answer session, Marcelo Blanco spoke emphatically on the level of Nigerians' patronage towards the game. 

The Argentine, whose last post was in Brazil as the country's Rugby National Facilitator said,  "It is strange to say because Brazil is a football country like Nigeria, when we talk with the people, everybody knows what rugby is but in the street of Brazil, you hear response like, Is Rugby food? But more surprising is that Brazil is 34th in the world ranking and Nigeria is 79th. The country that knows less of rugby is the higher ranked."
