THE sum of N14.3 million will be won at the 38th Central
Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship scheduled to hold from 16th
-25th June, 2016 at the Tennis Court, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The annual competition is organized by the Nigeria Tennis
Federation in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
According to the organizers, no fewer than 200 players
have registered for the preliminary round of this year's edition of the annual
tournament which will also feature wheelchair Tennis in both male and female
categories.
Disclosing the prize money at an event heralding this
year’s edition in Lagos on Tuesday, Ag. Director, Corporate Communications
Department, CBN, Isaac Okorafor, said the winners in the Men's and Ladies'
event will get N700,000 each, while the runners-up will go home with N500,000
each.
Okorafor who was represented by Mrs Sintiki Thaanda also
revealed that the winner of the Wheel-Chair Tennis male and female event will
be rewarded with N250,000 each, while winners of the men's singles, men's
doubles, ladies' singles and ladies' doubles and the wheelchair tennis will
also be rewarded with prize money.
President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Engr. Sani
Ndanusa said wildcards will not be automatic for players in this edition of the
competition.
"We want to put it on notice that wildcards will not
be given as father Christmas. The NTF technical committee has recommended that
wildcards will only be offered to junior players with ITF junior rankings and
players with ATP and WTA points.
“At a time when some are struggling to hold on to their
sponsorship, the CBN has stayed with the NTF and we are very grateful for
having us in their plans," said Idanusa, who was represented by the
Vice-President of the federation, Yemi Owoseni.
The CBN tennis has been running since its inception in
1979, producing such great players as David Imonitie, Veronica Oyibokia, Sunday
Maku, Sadiq Abdullahi, Remi Osho and Clara Usofa.
