Afrobasket: D'Tigress have first training session in Bamako

NIGERIA'S senior Women's basketball team, D’Tigress had their first training at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako, Mali ahead of 2017 FIBA Women's Afrobasket tournament scheduled to start on Friday 18th of August, 2017, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.


D'Tigress will start their campaign in Group B at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maïga, Bamako against Mozambique on Friday before taking on DR Congo on the 19th and Egypt on the 20th. The team will observe a 2-day break before slugging it out with Guinea on the 22nd and playing Senegal in the last group game the following day.


D'Tigress who arrived Bamako, the capital city of Mali about 2:45pm local time, took part in the Thursday's training focused on developing confidence,  shooting, dribbling, ball-handling, defending, passing, timing, stamina etc under the supervision of the technical crew led by Sam Vincent and his two assistant coaches, Peter Ahmedu and Ochuko Okworogun.


Vincent, who hopes to lead the team to their third Afrobasket title in Mali, expressed satisfaction with his team and their readiness to take on Mozambique on Friday.


“I like the way the team is working right now; we feel good about the roaster. They are experienced players. We have got post players, shooters and we are solid on defence,” Vincent said. 



According to him, the team just needs to play hard, play smart and work together to have the chance of winning the 23rd edition of the tournament.


The 12-man list representing Nigeria are led by captain, Aisha Mohammed (University of Virginia), Evelyn Akhator (Dallas Wings), Ezinne Kalu (Savannah State University), Sarah Ogoke (RC Celta Vigo, Spain), Adaora Elonu (Perfumeria Avenda, Spain), Chioma Udeaja (First Bank Basketball club), Nkechi Akashili (First Bank Basketball club) and Upe Atosu (First Bank Basketball club).


Others are Ndidi Madu (University of Florida), Cecelia Okoye (McNeese State University), Ugo Nwaigwe (Temple University, Wanger College) and Nyingifa Atonye Jennifer (Elitzur Holon, Isreal).


Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the tournament will end on the 27th of August, 2017.

The winners and runners-up will be qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
