SOUTH WEST RUGBY LEAGUE: Cowrie, Racing, Lagos Rugby Club secure vital victories

DEFENDING champion, Cowrie Rugby Football Club, Racing RFC and Lagos RFC recorded victories in the CMB Building Maintenance and Inv. Co. Ltd sponsored South West Rugby League Week 4 matches held at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Cowrie RFC showed what it takes to defend their league title with a slim 10-7 win over Police RFC. The match which started with so much tension saw both teams unable to create clear cut chances until in the 20th minutes when Cowrie’s Hafis Ayinla who stood in for their unfit captain, Azeez Ladipo crossed over the white wash for a try after he took a quick penalty tap from the opposition twenty-two. The successful conversion by the young fly half, Fred Ochei guaranteed the maximum 7 points for Cowrie.

With the game heading into the half time break with Cowrie having a 7 points advantage, a defensive laps from winger, Sammy Ekpo allowed Malik Salihu run out wide and step in for a beautiful try under the post for Police as Samson Yahaya kicked the ball in between the upright to tie the point at 7-7 just before the break .

Police back line opened up at every opportunity in the second half, keeping Cowrie on the back foot before Alfred Ochei gave his side a slender advantage with a successful penalty kick from 3 meters.

Earlier on, in-form Racing RFC bounces back from their Week 3 loss to smash a hapless Gosar RFC of Lagos by 31 points to 3.

At the end of week 4, Racing occupies the top spot of the CMB sponsored South West Rugby League while Cowrie trail in 2nd spot, Police follows behind in the 3rd position and Gosar sits at the bottom of the table.

In the Division 1 match played at the same venue, the 3 penalties scored by Mohammed Salisu and  Stephen James handed Lagos RFC the much needed win against Eco II in a match that saw the 1st red card of the league season awarded to Lawal Audu of Lagos RFC for elbowing an opponent.
