OPEIFA HANDBALL CUP: Ayetoro, Aje Comprehensive in bright starts

THE 2nd edition of Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship tagged ‘Opeifa Cup’ commenced on Monday at the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba with Ayetoro Snr. Grammar School beating Yinka Folawiyo Gram School 4-0 in the Boys’ category while Aje Comprehensive bagged a 12-1 win over Folex in the Girls’ event.


Nawar Deen also defeated Eric Moore Grammar School 4-1 to launch their campaign on an impressive note with same as Archbishop Adelaja who outplayed Whitesand School 6-2.

Royalty Baptist recorded a 2-0 win over Ajangbadi High school just as St. Francis edged Lagos Progressive 2-1. Ikosi Senior drubbed Community Snr. High School, Surulere 8-0 while Lagos City College conquered Lagos State Senirr Model College 8-4.

Despite Community Senior School’s head coach, Babatunde Abari commended the formation of the tournament which he pointed will aid the development of the game.

He said: “I’m not in any way saddened by the result what gives me joy is the fact that  this tournament provides us and others as well the opportunity to have tournament experience. This is our first time ever playing tournament and we have learnt a few things here.  I’m very sure by the time we come for this tournament again, we will do very well.”

On his part, Ikosi’s coach Ayobami Akinsanya said he wouldn’t use the match to judge his team but was quick to point that their target of reaching the final has been set on motion.


18 matches are on the card in the senior category on Tuesday with the tie between Xplanter Group and State Snr. College setting proceedings off while Herbert Macaulay and Estate School will get the junior category underway with 15 matches on the schedule.

The competition which is being organised by the Lagos State Handball Association and sponsored by former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Kayode Opeifa is featuring 42 male teams and 38 female teams competing on group basis,Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.
