AFRICAN Games Champion, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has qualified for
the final of the men's Shot Put at the ongoing 2019 World Athletics
Championships in Doha.
Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the African Championship record holder threw a
distance of 20.94m on his second attempt in the qualifying round to be among
the top 8 qualifiers in his group and became the first Team Nigeria
athlete to compete for a medal in Doha.
Enekwechi will face Tomas Walsh of New Zealand, who led
the qualifying round with a distance of 21.92m, Brazil’s Darlan Romani (21.69m),
Serbia’s Armin Sinancevic (21.51m), USA’s Darrell Hill (21.25m), Poland’s
Konrad Bukowiecki (21.16m), Chech Republic’s Tomas Stanex (20.73m) and Canada’s
Tim Nedow (20.53) at the at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.
Enekwechi threw himself into history after winning gold
at the 12th Africa Games’ shot put in Rabat, Morocco. He broke Frank
Elemba’s Africa Games record of 20.25m to set a new one of 21.48m, a mark he
landed on his last attempt.
