South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Lee In-Tae has
assured that his country will continue to promote Taekwondo in Nigeria, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.
In-Tae, who gave the assurance during the final day of
the 10th Korean Ambassador’s Cup at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere Lagos
on Friday, said the Championship is part of efforts to promote Taekwondo in
Nigeria.
The competition which has over 150 athletes from 25 teams
compete for honours, was organized by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation and
supported by the Korean Embassy in Nigeria.
“It also aims to help Nigerian athletes to improve their
skills so that they can compete on the global stage. Next year, the Summer
Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan,” begins In-Tae.
“The experiences
of today’s competition will help Nigerians beat other competitors from abroad,
and hopefully many of you will become Olympic medalist. I have lived in this
country for about two years and I have seen the great spirit of Nigerian
people. I have no doubt that one day you will surprise the world with your
talents and skills, and people will be inspired by your achievements.
“There is another important reason why we try to promote
Taekwondo in Nigeria. Taekwondo has helped strengthen the mutual relationship
between Korea and Nigeria. As more Nigerians practice Taekwondo, more Nigerians
are eager to study the Korean culture. Also, many Koreans are growing fond of
Nigeria as Taekwondo spread across the country.
“We have been introducing Taekwondo to numerous primary
and Junior Secondary schools in FCT, so that children will have a chance to
learn more about Korea. Likewise, the Korean Cultural Center is teaching
Taekwondo to the general public, as part of their efforts to spread the charm
of Korean Culture. We will carry on these efforts so that Taekwondo will
continue to be the bridge of friendship and unity between Koreans and Nigerians.
“I want to express my special thanks to the Federal
Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation
for making this championship possible. I would also like to express my
gratitude to all participating athletes, coaches, referees and guests who have
come to join this special event,” he said.
