SUPER Eagles captain, Mikel Obi showed what to be expected from him on his return to England with a fantastic display of football artistry as his championship side, Middlesbrought were held to a 1-1 draw by Newport County in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that Mikel, who has not played since November, last year, showed no sign of match rustiness, as he recorded 85% pass accuracy in his 62 minutes of action before being replaced by Adam Clayton.

Daniel Ayala had given the Tony Pulis side the lead in the 51st minute but a late equaliser from Matthew Dolan means Boro will head to Newport for a replay in the fourth round tie.

The championship side acknowledged the contribution of the former Chelsea midfielder during the course of the game via their live update on the club’s official website.

“First chance for Boro sees John Obi Mikel pick out Britt Assombalonga with a terrific pass, but the forward's strike from the left of the penalty area is well wide.

“John Obi Mikel eager to get on the ball in the opening 15 minutes, as well as producing some good long range passes with one helping create Boro's first chance of the game.

“A solid debut from John Obi Mikel, who comes off with just under half an hour left for Adam Clayton,” the championship side posted after the 31-year-old was subbed off.

The Nigerian international joined the Championship side on a deal until the end of the season after leaving China’s Tianjin Teda by mutual consent this month.

Boro are fifth in the second tier – six points behind Norwich, occupants of the second automatic promotion place, and seven behind the leaders Leeds and Mikel is expected to return to line up when the club travels to West Bromwich Albion for the matchday 30 of the Championship League.
