ABIA Warriors utility player Ndifreke Effiong says he
feels comfortable putting on the No1 jersey at the Nigeria Professional Football
League (NPFL) side, Abia Warriors.
In a chat with Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com after his team lost 2-1 to
Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM FC) in the NPFL matchday 16 encounter at the Agege Stadium on Wednesday, the Nigeria U-23 star revealed
that it was the No1 was the only vacant number available when he returned to
the club before the commencement of this league season.
"I was not around when the numbers were assigned to
players and when I came back they gave me the number and I am comfortable with
it. I like the number and there is nothing wrong with the number," said
Effiong who can play as a full back, midfielder or supporting striker.
Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medalist and Charles
Henlong of Enugu Rangers are the notable outfield players in the NPFL that wear
the goalkeeper's shirt this season.
Other examples of past players that wore the figure
traditionally associated with goalkeepers includes former Holland midfielder,
Edgar Davids who chose the shirt number to underline his authority as League Two side, Barnet's
player-manager and captain between 2012–2014.
Stuart Balmer, a defender by trade also wore the number
one when Charlton decided their squad should be numbered alphabetically in the
early 1990s.
Holland went into the 1974 World Cup in West Germany with
free-scoring attacking midfielder Ruud Geels as their No 1.
Argentina's Osvaldo Ardiles wore the number one during
the 1982 World Cup finals, while at the 1986 finals, it was the turn of Sergio
Almiron.
