24 teams for Atiku Rasheed Abogun U-12 Kids Cup

TWENTY Four teams are participating in the maiden edition of the Atiku Rasheed Abogun U-12 Kids Cup competition organised by the Lagos state grassroots soccer association.


The grassroots tournament is being bankrolled by Chief Atiku Rasheed Abogun, Chairman, Atican Nigeria Limited.

Speaking at presentation of trophy by the sponsor of the competition held at the Atican Beach Resort, off Abraham Adesanya Estate Road, Okun Ajah Town, Lekki-Ajah, Lagos on Tuesday, Chief Abogun advised the participants to ensure fair play, promised to make the competition a yearly event.

"What impresses me most is that this competition is for kids who will surely have bright future in the game of football and we must support them.

"I've always been a sportsman even though I enjoy wrestling. I see this as another way of contributing to development of the game of football and also empowering our youths in the state, they say an idle hand is devils workshop.

"This is the first edition and I  can assure you that God's willing it will be a yearly event," he said.

Chief Abogun announced that the overall winning team will be rewarded with a cash prize of N300,000, and the second placed team will go home with the sum of N250,000, while the third and fourth placed team will be given N200,000 and N150,000 respectively.

There will also be award and cash prizes for Best Player,  Best Goalkeeper, Best Behaved Team and the Highest Goalscorer.

According to the organisers, competition is being organized to celebrate Chief Atiku Abogun birthday, in which he will be cutting a birthday cake with the captain of the finalist teams.

"We will like to appreciate the kind gesture of the sponsor because despite the downturn global economic recession facing the country which could have prompted him to turn his back to this type of call, he still finds means to bring smiles to the faces of our youths in Lagos State," the association said.

The tournament which kicks off on Thursday, is expected to last for two weeks with the final scheduled for the Campos square mini stadium, Ajele, Lagos Island on Sunday, 23rd April, 2017.
