NURTW set for United Boxing championship

By Akeem Lawal
Arrangements are in top gear for the maiden National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) United Boxing championship, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.

The boxing bout, which will hold on a yet to be named date in August is being put together by Universal Boxing Council (UBC) champion, Mojeed Okedara who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of Mojifrcan Global Events Management LLC, USA as part of ways to revive the state of the sport in the country.

Speaking during presentation of belt to the NURTW President, Alhaji Usman Najeem Yasin in Abuja, Okedara, who believes that the dearth of competitions had stalled the growth of the sport, added that if boxers were not having competitions, their skills would not be honed for good performance.

"Nigeria is blessed with talented boxers but there are no competitions to assist them to harness their skills. That is why I am putting this event together to take boxing to a better destination.

“I want to appreciate the NURTW president and all members across the country for accepting to organize the boxing tournament to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Union."

NURTW President, Alhaji  Yasin said the aim of the union is to use the event of their 40th Anniversary as platform to contribute to the development of youths and sports in Nigeria, especially to encourage and support the growth of professional boxing.

He said Nigeria which has in the past gotten global recognition through various boxing championships has since left the sport to die gradually.

"We see it as our collective responsibility to help to rebuild boxing to its former glory and beyond. Supporting this competition annually to will serve as our long term contribution towards the development of youths and sports in the country.

“Therefore, NURTW has authorized and permitted undefeated World Boxing Champion, Mojeed Okedara to organize and promote the above mentioned competition in honour of our beloved Union and as one of the activities to celebrate our 40th Anniversary."

Okedara informed Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com that there will also be an awards ceremony to honour all those who have contributed immensely towards the growth of boxing in the country.
