The inaugural edition
of the Leg Lagos Challenge kicked off on Monday with three exciting matches
played at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The international
youth tournament organized by Donbalon Sports Commerz and sponsored by wave
making new entrant into satellite home entertainment, Pipul TV, features 16 U-23
grassroots football teams drawn from different parts of the state.
The championship
exclusively for players between the ages of 18 and 23 and tagged “Festival of
Football Academies” is being played on a round robin basis with the best two
teams in the four group format qualifying for the knockout stage.
In the first game of
the tournament, Glorious Day Football Club played out a goalless draw with Star
Base Football Club.
The second game of
the day between New Era FC and Gbagada FC, was thoroughly exciting and with end
to end actions that kept the crowd at the edges of their seats. At the end of
the game, both teams shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
The last match of the
day between Team 360 and Kudos FC, equally lived up to expectations of the
delirious soccer fans. The thrilling encounter which ended 1-1, was indeed, a
testimony to the acclaimed abundance of pure soccer talents in the grassroots.
Speaking at the end
of match day 1, the Director-General of the LLC, Hon. Abdoubaq Ladi Balogun
expressed delight with the standard of play and discipline displayed by all the
teams.
"We are
impressed with the performances of the teams that played in today's matches.
And we hope to see better matches as the tournament progresses," Balogun
enthused.
Meanwhile, the
tournament which is ably supported by sportswear manufacturers, Haggai, and
endorsed by Lagos FA and Lagos State Sports Commission, continues on Tuesday at
the same venue.
