Sierra Leone 0-0 Nigeria: Eagles still on track, says Rohr

By Akeem Lawal

SUPER Eagles manager Gernot Rohr believes Nigeria is still on track of securing a qualification to the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations despite being held to a goalless draw by Sierra Leone in the Group L qualifying match at the National Stadium in Freetown on Tuesday.

Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the Leone Stars, who mounted a stunning fightback to draw 4-4 with the Super Eagles last week, put up another gritty display to frustrate their more illustrious opponents and deny them an early ticket to the AFCON finals.

Speaking immediately after the encounter, the German-Franco manager who admitted that the team put up a better performance against the Leone Stars, also noted that goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is beginning to show the stuff he is made of in the national team after keeping a clean sheet in the encounter.

“We saw a better solid Nigerian side. A better defensive team than last time. Our goalkeeper Maduka had a very good match. The other day he conceded four goals but that was not his fault. In today’s match, he showed everybody what he can do. We are on the right track as a team and my mission is to do well all the time,” he said.

The result leaves the Super Eagles top of the standings on eight points, with Benin (seven), Sierra Leone (three) and Lesotho (two) all still alive as far as qualification for Cameroon 2022 is concerned.
