Getafe 1-3 Villarreal: Chukwueze plays for 52 min, Etebo missing

By Akeem Lawal
SUPER Eagles’ winger Samuel Chukwueze was in action for 52 minutes as Villarreal recorded a 3-1 victory over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Wednesday night to maintain their push for a Champions League spot.

Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the Nigeria international who made his 34th La Liga appearances for the Yellow Submarines was replaced by Moi Gomez in the 52nd minutes while the game was still goalless.

The change however paid off for Coach Javi Calleja as Santi Cazorla put Villarreal ahead from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. The Spanish midfielder then restored their advantage with a second spot-kick in the 86th after Hugo Duro had equalised for Getafe in the 80th.

Ruben Pena sealed Villarreal's sixth win in eight matches by scoring in added time as they provided the perfect response to their 4-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday, which was their first loss since the season resumed after the coronavirus stoppage.

Chukwueze’s compatriot, Oghenekaro Etebo was not available for Getafe. The Super Eagles midfielder is yet to fully recover from a muscle injury.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury in the team’s 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on June 29, and missed the 1-0 loss to Real Madrid and the goalless draw away at Osasuna last weekend.

Wednesday’s victory took fifth-placed Villarreal on to 57 points, three behind Sevilla who occupy the final Champions League berth but have a game in hand.

Getafe's hopes of qualifying for Europe's elite competition for the first time are all but over, however, as they were left sitting sixth in the table on 53.
