SUPER Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi has turned to uncle
Jay-Jay Okocha for advice since breaking into the Arsenal team but is hopeful
he can become even better than the former Nigeria midfielder.
The Nigerian kid sensation has long been heralded as one
of the most promising players at the Emirates and has managed to make the step
up to Arsene Wenger's first-team this season.
The 19-year-old has scored two goals in his last three
Premier League appearances to prompt Arsenal to reward his form with a second
contract extension in just seven months.
Okocha has followed his nephew's progress closely this
season and Iwobi is delighted his performances are making the seven-time
Nigerian footballer of the year proud.
“The fact he comes to watch shows it means a lot to him
and he shows his support. It is good for me," he told Arsenal.com.
"I’m just happy I’m making him proud and hopefully I
will be even better than him. I get advice from him] almost weekly. He came to
my house the other day. Unfortunately I missed him because I was here [at the
training ground] but we do keep in contact a lot.
“He is always telling me that he knows a lot has happened
and that I have come far, but he says to stay humble and that I will go far,”
Iwobi insisted.
Iwobi, who was born in Lagos, has opted to follow in
Okocha's footsteps and represent Nigeria at international level, despite also
being eligible for England. He made two appearances for Nigeria - both against
Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
