Israel-Gaza Fighting: Ibe Zito injured, house destroyed

By Akeem Lawal

Former Nigerian football player Ibe Zito Ogbonna is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Ashdod after his home was destroyed by Hamas Rocket as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict grinds on.

The Hapoel Tel Aviv of Israel football club legend made a series of live videos on his Facebook page, showing the extent of the damage done by the rockets which slammed into buildings in Ashkelon and Ashdod, injuring several people on Sunday and Monday morning.

“Bomb just hit my house now. Old boy the house is on fire. I don’t have a home anymore. Now evacuated to the hospital,” he said while being assisted in a 3:40 sec video.

The former Enugu Rangers, Sharks and Enyimba forward posted another video while in hospital.

“I’m getting well guys, thanks for your concern. Thanks for your prayers. Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I will be fine, I am taking treatment already,” he revealed.

Zito 'king of goals' played for Hapoel Tel Aviv from 2003 to 2007 where he won two Israel State Cups 2006, 2007.

After a brief stint with CFR Cluj in Romania, South African Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs, KF Apolonia of Albania, Kazakhstan’s FC Atyrau, FK Vardar of Macedonia and Eyimba, Zito relocated to Israel in 2017.

The violence between Israel and Hamas has intensified in the past eight days and is showing no signs of abating despite regular diplomatic efforts to bring about a ceasefire. The region's fiercest hostilities in years have taken over 200 lives in Israel.

According to Israeli media, Hamas has fired over 3,350 rockets from Gaza -- 200 on Monday alone -- and that Israeli strikes have killed at least 130 militants. The death toll in Gaza has crossed 200 -- including 61 children and 36 women -- while 10 people have died in Israel -- including two children.
