NEWLY crowned World Boxing Federation (WBF) champion, Ridwan Oyekola (Scorpion) has presented his belt to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
Oyekola defeated Lucas Mathias Montesino of Argentina by
unanimous decision to emerge the new WBF International Super-featherweight champion
at the Ilaji Hotel and Sports Resorts, Akanran in Ibadan, Oyo State on
Saturday, December 27, 2020.
While receiving Scorpion in the council chambers of Agodi
Government House in Ibadan on Thursday, Makinde reiterated the commitment of
his administration towards providing an enabling environment for youth in the
state to grow their capacity and maximize their talents.
Makinde who commended the boxer, the promoter and all the
stakeholders for their collective efforts in the success of the bout said it is
a great honor to witness the feat in the life of his administration.
He expressed believe that If Nigeria could produce Anthony Joshua in the heavyweight category many youth only need opportunity to get the best out of their talent.
The governor pointed that part of the reasons for
renovating the Lekan Salami Adamsingba Stadium is to create an avenue for
talents, give exposure to youth and also arrest youth restiveness while
considering sports as a vehicle to leverage in bringing the best out of them.
Adding that the Stadium when completed will add value to
the state, he revealed that his government will work towards hosting an
international bout , National and International Tennis Championship as well as
the next National Sports Festival after that of Edo in the new state of art
facilities.
“Boxing has always being a treasured sport for us in Oyo State and I am not surprised at his feat because I believe more World Champions are also going to be produced in Oyo State.
“I am reluctant to give him a car (because he has gotten
one) but the government will do something to encourage him and the promoter,”
he said while promising the 23- year -old boxer cash reward as a means of
encouragement.
