NIGERIA international, Henry Onyekuru has vowed to return stronger after suffering a knee injury that requires surgery, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.

The Super Eagles forward was stretched off the pitch with just 13 minutes left in Anderlecht’s 1-0 win over Eupen in a Belgian First Division A fixture on Friday night.

The 20 year old underwent a scan on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury and Anderlecht has confirmed that the player will need surgery on his knee injury for a torn medial ligament.

“After a thorough examination, the RSCA medical staff is able to report that Henry Onyekuru has torn the inner lateral ligament of the knee. It will be operated urgently. The medical staff is in close contact with Everton to determine where the surgery will take place. Henry Onyekuru injured Friday night in the match against KAS Eupen,” the club said on its official website.

Onyekuru was in pole position to book his ticket in Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup squad to Russia at the end of this season, but that could be in doubt now if he misses an extended period of time.

The Nigeria forward now hopes to return soon from the latest setback.

“What a great year it has been for me, thank you to everyone that has supported me, especially the Almighty God. I hope to return back to fitness soon and will be back fitter & stronger in the new year. 🏿,” he said via his official Twitter handle, @henryconyekuru late on Saturday.

Onyekuru was signed by Everton for £7.2m from Eupen in the summer but due to work permit restrictions, the wide-forward was sent back on loan to Belgium with champions Anderlecht.
