Dessers: My partnership with Onuachu will be deadly

By Akeem Lawal

KRC Genk striker, Cyriel Dessers is convinced that he can form a great partnership with his Nigerian teammate Paul Onuachu at his new club after playing just one match together, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.

Dessers and Onuachu inspired Genk to a 2-1 comeback victory against Zulte Waregem in their opening game of the 2020-21 Belgian First Division A season on Sunday.

Onuachu had cancelled out Olivier Deschacht’s opener after coming off the bench, before Dessers scored the match-winning goal with a well-taken effort from the penalty spot.

The 25-year-old Dessers then took to social media to share his feelings on his first competitive match for Genk, while also revealing his delight to help his new club kick off the season with a victory.

“First win and official goal for Genk and a nice comeback from the team,” Dessers tweeted.

Dessers, who joined the Blue-White in June following his eye-catching performances during his one-year stay with Dutch side Heracles Almelo, also believes he can form a potent attacking force with compatriot Onuachu at the club.

"We are complementary and can play together. He is so strong and sure when the opposition is already tired ... We can certainly help each other, he can keep two men talking.

"They will have to be good to stop us together. Well, each one goal and the three points home, that shouldn't be more. This was a good start, although we also realize that it is only the beginning. It must be even better, even stronger," Dessers was quoted by voetbalkrant.com.

“The head is off. For my first goal I don’t mind that it is with a penalty kick. I hope that my girlfriend looked and that she saw the heart I made for her.

“I could have scored after that, but first I miss something that I normally don’t miss and then there was a rejected goal.

In his reaction, Onuachu said, “We only trained together once. It was a bit different from last year, when I was indeed alone a lot in the front. It went well, it's up to the coach to decide. I'm not 100% yet, but coming in, scoring and winning gives a positive feeling."
