Five out of the six wrestlers that will represent Nigeria
at the 2019 Senior Wrestling World Championships, have arrived Nur-Sultan – the
capital city of Kazakhstan, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.
The female wrestlers were accompanied by the president of
the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Hon. Daniel Igali and two coaches; Purity Akuh
and Victor Kodei, departed the country via Turkish Airline, had a 12 hour
layover in Istanbul before landing in Kazakhstan on Saturday.
The wrestlers have settled in at King Hotel Nur-Sultan.
The wrestlers include two-time Commonwealth champion,
Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), who won a silver medal at the 2017 edition of the
World Championship held in Paris, France. Others are nine-time African champion
and Commonwealth Games gold medalists, Blessing Oborududu (68kg); two-time
Commonwealth champion, Aminat Adeniyi (62kg); African champions, Blessing
Onyebuchi (76kg) and Mercy Genesis (50kg).
Meanwhile, 3-time African champion Emmanuel Ogbonna
(74kg), the only male athlete in the team who will be competing in the
Freestyle event, will join the contingent on Monday.
The 2019 Wrestling World Championships which started on Saturday at the Barys Arena in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan will end on September
22.
The Championships will serve as the first qualification
event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The top six finishers in each
Olympic weight category in Nur-Sultan will secure an Olympic qualification for
their nation.
The remaining qualification spots will be earned at
continental competitions and a "Last Chance Qualifier" during the
2020 competition calendar.
