Commonwealth gold medalist, Josephine Esuku, says she is
ready to make the country proud at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Test event
which begins today at the Makuhari Messe Hall 5, Chiba, Japan.
The event tagged “Ready Steady Tokyo” is part of the Test
Events Program organized by the International Federations, National Federations
as well as by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic
Games to allow organisers to assess readiness at Makuhari Messe Hall and hone
their preparations for next year.
“I am excited to be here in Tokyo in Japan for the
Olympic test event in Taekwondo. There are about 18 other countries and the
event is starting tomorrow (Thursday) by 9 am. I am ready to give my best. I’m
here with my coach, Ahmad Adetola-Kazeem. He is here to coach me and give me
his 100 percent. So we are excited to be here,” Esuku told Nigeria Taekwondo
Federation media after undergoing a successful weigh in.
Olympic action will take place on day one with two weight
divisions contested – the men's under-58 kilograms and the women's under-49kg. Day
two will feature Para-taekwondo, with the sport preparing to debut on the
Paralympic programme at Tokyo 2020.
According to the organizers, the WT Competition Rules and
Interpretation in force as of June 1 2018 shall be applied.
The competitions at this event will be held in single
elimination tournament system with repechage for the bronze medal
contests.
The duration of contest shall be three rounds of two
minutes each with a one minute rest period between rounds. In the case of a
tied score after the completion of the third round, a fourth round of one minute
will be conducted as the Golden round, after a one minute rest period following
the third (3rd) round.
