SUNSHINE Stars Technical Adviser, Duke Udi expects the
team to avoid being involved in a relegation battle this coming Nigeria
Professional Football League (NPFL) season.
Udi, who quit as Coach of Osun United to replace Austin
Eguavoen at Owena waves with the club deep in relegation battle, was able to
guide the team to safety, finishing in respectable 10th position on
the log.
In a chat with SportingLife, the former 3SC, Plateau
United and Enyimba player said he needs about 10 new players to add to the ones
on ground to challenge for title this term.
“We don’t want to go through what we went through last
season that just went by. That we cannot sleep, tension everywhere because when
you are fighting relegation, it’s not good thing. As a young coach, you will
not want to fight relegation. So we must prepare very well, get the players we
want and add it to the ones we already have and we hope that most of our key
players be retained. We just need about
10 to 12 players to beef up the team so that we can fight for the title.
“If we have the money to get them, that will be fine. I
have some players I love and I like their style and they can fit into my own
style. I don’t want to pick players just because I want to pick players because
I play players on merit because if there is no result, every coach job is at
stake.
"Results make a coach to stay, so I need to get the best players and give
them the best training that can move the team forward and secure my job. My job
is first because every coach wants to win and if you are winning, your result
will speak for you and your job is secured,” he told SportingLife.
