CAPTAIN of Cowrie Rugby Football Club, Azeez Ladipo
believes his team is capable of beating defending champions Samurai Barracudas to
the Lagos Independence 7s title in this year’s edition of the tournament which
holds on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th October, 2017 at the Polo Club, Ikoyi
Lagos.
Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the ‘Friends of
Rugby’ Lagos Independence Rugby 7s Tournament is an annual sporting event
organized to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence. The tournament has been on
since the year 2009.
Barracudas won the West African flagship tournament last
year beating side Cowrie 25-10, who boasted several Nigerian Internationals in
their squad, in a thrilling final.
Ladipo, who is also the Captain of Nigeria's national
Rugby Football team, the Black Stallions, said the team has learnt from the mistakes
they made during last year’s final.
“The trainers have put us through our paces and we are
sharper this year. We have thoroughly analysed last year’s final and corrected
those mistakes that cost us the game at practice.
“It is a tough task as Samurai always put up the best
possible Sevens squads in world rugby. That is not easy to match but we have
the quality and depth and hopefully, all the boys will fight to win the games
this weekend,” Ladipo told The Guardian.
This year’s tournament will feature teams like Racing
Academy (UK), Cambridge Merlins (UK), Conquerors SC (Ghana) and other local
teams such as Racing Rugby Club, Delta Dragon Rugby FC, Barewa RFC, Sabongari
RFC, Dynamite Rugby Club and Blue Wolf amongst others.
The two-day tournament will offer side attractions like
musical performance, National Cap Day and Cross Bar Challenge for fans.
