GOtv Boxing Night will become a centerpiece in Nigeria, says Alaafin of Oyo

By Our Reporter
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, on Sunday, said that the GOtv Boxing Night will “become a centerpiece in Nigeria”.

The front-line Yoruba monarch expressed his conviction while addressing journalists at the just concluded GOtv Boxing Night 15, which held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, (formerly known as Liberty Stadium) in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

“No doubt, GOtv boxing is contributing to the development of boxing in Nigeria. I commend that and appeal to other organizations that promote boxing to adopt this initiative,” Adeyemi said.

Oba Adeyemi, who was a boxer before ascending to the throne, further advocated for the promotion of local boxing in the country.

According to him, “the interest of sporting in Nigeria is focused on Football, to the neglect of other sports. We should be able to go back to develop boxing.”

“I have also been promoting boxing. We will be having a boxing game in October.”

GOtv Boxing Night 15 ended after seven fights at the hall. Ridwan ‘Scorpion’ Oyekola emerged the best boxer when he defeated Prince ‘Lion’ Nwoye by a unanimous decision in their national lightweight bout. He won the Mojisola Ogunsanya trophy for the best boxer of the night with a cash price of N1million.

Meanwhile, Oba Adeyemi described as a “gift from God” the birth of his two sets of twins.
