Watford celebrate Ekong’s 50th cap for Nigeria

By Akeem Lawal

ENGLISH Premier League side, Watford has acknowledged the achievement of Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong on his Golden appearance for Nigeria.

Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports that the 28-year-old was solid in defense on his 50th international appearance as Nigeria defeated Liberia 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying match at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Friday.

Ekong made his senior international debut for the Super Eagles on 13 June 2015, playing 90 minutes in an AFCON qualifying match against Chad.

In a write-up with the headline “Internationals: 50 Caps For Troost-Ekong”, the English Premier League side highlighted the performances of their players who were in action for their respective countries during this international break.

“William Troost-Ekong marked his 50th Nigeria cap with a 2-0 victory over Liberia, playing alongside fellow Hornet Peter Etebo. Etebo came on as a late substitute in the World Cup Qualifier, with Troost-Ekong captaining the Super Eagles as they topped the group.

“The Nigeria duo will not play in the next fixture with Cape Verde tomorrow (Tuesday September 7), and will return to Watford ahead of Saturday’s match with Wolves,” the Hornets wrote.

Others mentioned includes Craig Cathcart, who impressed in the centre of defence as Northern Ireland beat Lithuania 4-1 on Thursday and Juraj Kucka, who featured for Slovakia for the first time as a Watford player last Wednesday in a 1-1 draw with Slovenia.

Daniel Bachmann, who started for Austria in two World Cup Qualifiers in the past week and Joshua King, who was a late substitute in Norway’s 2-0 win against Latvia were also mentioned.
