Wrestling Ranking Series: Adekuoroye grabs gold, as Oborududu settles for bronze

REIGNING world bronze medalist Odunayo Adekuoroye defeated Anshu Anshu of India 10-0 via a technical knockout and clinch gold in the 57kg at the 2020 Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series tournament in the Italian city of Rome.

The two-time Commonwealth champion had defeated Alina Akobiia of Ukraine 12 - 0 in the Round of 16, beat Arianna Carieri of Italy 10 - 0 in the quarter final before recording a 10 - 3 victory over Allison Mackenzie Ragan of USA in the semi final.


Multiple Africa champion, Blessing Oborodudu also joined her on the podium as she claimed Bronze in the 68kg.

The Commonwealth champion defeated Alina Berezhna Stadnik Makhynia of Ukraine in the bronze medal match to claim her medal.


The eight-time Africa champion who lost 3-1 to 
Tamyra Mariama Mensah (USA) in the Round of 16, bounced back to defeat Koumba Fanta Larroque of France 6 - 2 in the repechage.



However it was not a good outing for another commonwealth gold medalists, Aminat Adeniyi who lost in the quarter final to Kayla Colleen Miracle of USA.

Meanwhile, Africa champion, Mercy Genesis will be in action on Friday in the 50kg class.

The wrestlers are contesting for crucial ranking points which will boost their seeding at the 2020 Olympics in Japan later this year.

The tournament is also expected to put the wrestlers in good shape prior to the 2020 African Championships in Algeria early next month and the Africa/Oceania Olympic qualifier in El Jadida, Morocco, which will take place in March.
