THE 2016 edition of the Seyi Akinwunmi Charity Mini Tournament will kick-off on Saturday, 3rd of December at the Onikan Stadium Lagos.
The ‘Seyi Akinwunmi Charity Mini-Tournament’ is a charity
event named after Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi who also happens to be the chairman
of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) and 1st Vice President of the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The tourney is put together to raise funds for the
various charity works that the Seyi Akinwunmi Charity Foundation is involved
in.
A total of ten teams with players of age 40 and above, will
participate in this year’s edition which will run for three weekends in
December with the first set of games kicking off on the 3rd at the Onikan
Stadium, while the final will hold on the 29th at the Campos Mini Stadium in
Lagos.
The teams are Team MTN, WOSA, 36 Lions, Ikorodu, NATH
Boys, LSFA FC, Trinity House, LCM, ICOBA 78 AND ICOBA 79.
Speaking at the draw for the tournament held in Lagos on
Thursday, Barrister Akinwunmi said he remained committed to the development of
indigent children in the society.
“When we started the foundation, we were looking at
around 75 children. But if you count the numbers of children who have benefited
or who are benefiting now, they are much more than 200 and our objective has
always been that as those who are at the top graduates, they will expand the
horizon and also take a cue to give back to the society. So the idea is
multiplication.
"If you educate a child and the child grows through the
university and start doing well, makes progress in life and gives back and it
multiplies. Then that multiplication effects gives you wide horizon on the
society. I see this project as something that grows beyond my imagination and I
pray to God that it happens,” he said.
The opening game of the Tournament will see Team MTN, the
defending champions take on WOSA, while 36 Lions will trade tackles with
Ikorodu at the Onikan Stadium on Saturday.
On Sunday, 4th December, NATH Boys will engage LSFA FC,
while Trinity House will play LCM in the second match of the day.
On Saturday, 10th December, IKOBA 78 will engage the
winner of the match between NATH Boys and LSFA, while IKOBA 79 will play the
winner of Trinity House and LCM for a place in the semifinal round which comes
up on the 17th of December.
The final will then hold on the 29th of December at the
Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos.
