Tony Salam concedes WBA title fight defeat to Perez

By Akeem Lawal

NIGERIAN boxer Tony “Sugar” Salam has rated Cuba’s Mike Perez as better fighter during their vacant WBA Inter-continental Cruiserweight title fight at the Hotel Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Friday night.

35-year-old Perez scored a third-round technical knockout over the gritty Nigerian challenger and captured the pioneer organization’s regional belt with a resounding and convincing performance.

Perez improved his record to 25 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw and 16 knockouts, while Salam, who dropped his to 14 wins, 3 losses and 9 knockouts, says he has learnt a lot from the fight and won’t make any excuses.

“The better man won on the night. I put my all but it wasn’t good enough. I learned a lot from the fight. I’m not going to make any excuses. I’m sorry that I let my family, fan across the world, friends and Nigerian as whole down,” Salam posted on his Facebook page.

“Top respect to Mike Perez. He shows his superiority on the night. Need to go back home now and have a talk with my team and take it from there.

“Lots of respect to all of you. Couldn’t respond to all your well wishes while I was still at #WAR. Just will like to show my gratitude to you all. God bless you all.

“Most importantly, massive thank you to Saleh Gloves Promotions who has all been standing right next to me before the camp through out the camp and still took a lot of their time to make sure I’m in the right frame of mind after the fight,” he said.
