Okoye delighted to win Sparta Rotterdam Player of the Season award

By Akeem Lawal

NIGERIA international Maduka Okoye is in cloud nine after being voted the Player of The Season at his club, Sparta Rotterdam.

The Eredivisie side announced the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper as their best player via the team’s website after making an impressive debut season for the club.

“Your player of the season: Maduka Okoye”, the club said alongside a picture of the goalkeeper displaying the award.

The 22-year-old then uploaded the same picture on his Instagram page with the caption, “Happy to have been voted as Sparta Rotterdam’s Player of the Season!”

Okoye joined the Dutch side in the summer of the 2020/2021 Eredivisie season on a two-year-deal with an option for another two years following the expiration of his contract with German side, Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Despite a torrid start, the goalkeeper adjusted to life at the Rotterdam-based side and in no time became the undisputed number one choice at the club. He made 29 appearances and was voted Man of the Match three times by Whoscored.com during the season. His heroics helped the coach Henk Fraser team finish in eighth position.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Okoye chose to represent Nigeria and made his debut for the Nigerian national team in November 2019, in a friendly match against Brazil.

He had since made eight appearances for the three-time African champions under Coach Gernot Rohr.
