AFRICA’S first female Skeleton Winter Olympian, Simidele Adeagbo’s quest to qualify for the Winter 2022 Olympics, in Beijing, China suffered a temporary setback after toring her right calf muscle, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.
Adeagbo, who suffered the injury while participating
at the 2021/2022 BMW IBSF World Cup for the Olympic season in Innsbruck, Austria, late November, shared the news on her Instagram last weekend.
“I would have never imagined that my 2nd IBSF World Cup race would lead to a trip to the emergency room.
“But in the blink of an eye, I tore my right calf muscle as I pushed off the starting block. Despite the pain, I found the strength to keep fighting through the rest of the run. I put it all on the line and know that I tried my very best. Win or lose, I always do my best.
“A post race ultrasound in an Innsbruck ER diagnosed the muscle fiber rupture. I'm now taking some time away from the ice to recover and come back healthier and stronger as I continue on the path to qualifying for Beijing 2022.
“Sport has its ups and downs. But no matter how far down we may be, we're never too far down to come back.
“Thanks to the medical team @olympiaworld_innsbruck, @bsfnigeria and @seun_msamazing for your superb care throughout this,” she posted on her Instagram page.
The 40-year-old on Monday uploaded updates on the treatment of her leg as she hopes to return to action as soon as possible.
“At the start of the season, I built a 42-week plan, meticulously planning each phase of training on the road to @beijing2022. Needless to say, I didn't plan for an injury in week 30.
“But this is no mistake, no accident. It's a chance to see how deep the roots of my faith run.
“With rest, round the clock treatment and pool workouts, I'm getting stronger each day and eagerly anticipating my return to the ice.
“Each day is a step closer to coming back and an opportunity to write a new chapter of my story.
“I won't just survive. You will see me thrive. Victory is in my veins and I will still rise. Thanks so much for the outpour of well wishes and support” she also posted.
Adeagbo, who has already competed in some races is one of the 11 athletes named in Nigeria’s Bobsled and Skeleton national team to participate in races to qualify for the Winter 2022 Olympics, in Beijing, China.
In 2018, Adeagbo became Nigeria's first Olympian competing in the winter games and was also the first African and Black woman to compete in Olympic skeleton.
