2021 African Volleyball Nation Cup: Nigeria battle Ethiopia in final group game

By Akeem lawal

NIGERIA will face Ethiopia in their final match in Pool B on Friday by 4pm at the ongoing 2021 CAVB Men’s African Volleyball Nations Cup holding at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda.

The Nigerian side on Wednesday defeated South Sudan 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) in their second match after bouncing back from their opening day defeat that saw them losing 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) to 10-time African Champions Tunisia on Tuesday.

The Head Coach of Nigeria men's team, Usman Abdullah said the match against South Sudan was a physical one but experience won the game for Nigeria.

Abdullah said his target is to reach the Quarterfinals and beating South Sudan is the first step.

The ex-International hailed the players for giving their best and adhering to corrections after the team lost to Tunisia on Tuesday.

"South Sudan lost 2-3 to Ethiopia on Tuesday and it was expected of them to become more physical against us. I am excited the boys used their experience to suppress the South Sudan boys.

"The team is not in Rwanda for jamboree, our minimum target is to be in this year's Quarterfinals and if possible secure the Semifinals ticket. For those who knows me, the word impossible is not in my dictionary.

"After losing to Tunisia, I drew the attention of the boys to their bad blocks and lack of defending after an attack and I am happy the boys adhered to every instructions from the coaching crew".
Abdullah said the next mission is to secure maximum points against Ethiopia on Friday.

"Our mission is simple, beat Ethiopia and qualify for the Quarterfinals. We are not going to joke with an set against Ethiopia, the boys means serious business this time around,” he said.
