Wrestlers to commence training in Rio on Wednesday

THE seven Nigeria wrestlers to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will on Wednesday commence training in Brazil, Sportsbiz247.blogspot.com reports.


The wrestlers who arrived in Brazil with the Team Nigeria athletes on Tuesday immediately went for their accreditation.

President, Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Hon Daniel Igali gave the information via his facebook page moments after arriving Rio.

Igali who has continuously emphasized on the need for the wrestlers to have their training partners with them at the Olympics if the country is to produce a medal, will however hope to resolve the issue in Brazil.

“Arrived Rio a few hours ago after missing connecting flight at Sao Paolo and staying over. The team has gone for accreditation at the Athletes Olympic village. I have also checked into the hotel. After a day of rest, training should continue tomorrow. Hopefully we can work out the issue of training partners before the end of the opening ceremony on the 5th of August,” Igali said.

Wrestling event at the Games is scheduled to take place from 14 to 21 August at Hall 3 of the Olympic Training Center in Barra da Tijuca. Nigeria male representatives will be on the mat on the 14th, while their female counterparts will commence their campaign on the 17th.

The seven wrestlers that will represent the country at the Games consist of five female: Mercy Genesis (48kg), Odunayo Adekuoroye (53kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg), Blessing Oborududu (63kg) and Hannah Reuben (69Kg) as well as two male; Amas Daniel (65kg) and Soso Tamarau (97kg). They will be trained by the national Coach of the NWF, Victor Kodei and his deputy, Purity Akuh.
